Urban art is a combination of street art and graffiti. For our project it’s every form of art we can find in the streets of Leuven and of course graffiti will cover a big part of it. The term 'urban art' covers more than just art, it is also a culture. The artist has a special bond with the urban culture of his city. There is a lot of controversy about urban art because a lot of people think of it as vandalism. It’s difficult to say something about it. On the one hand it’s indeed illegal - the ‘artists’ destroy someone’s property - but on the other hand they perk up the city.
The most famous street art artist is probably Banksy, the United Kingdom-based artist. But of course there are also numerous artists active in Belgium and more specifically in Leuven. On this website we want to put the artists of Leuven in the spotlight.
